On an extremely hot day, we enjoyed a very
interesting talk about the development of Heide, one of Melbourne's most-loved
cultural destinations.
Lesley Harding
and Kendrah Morgan, curators at the Heide Museum of Modern Art, spoke enthusiastically
about the research for their book Sunday's
Garden and showed some fascinating photos from the early days when Sunday
and John Reed began the hard work of building the garden on their
property.
Recent photos of the area gave
a sense of the wonderful legacy that we can all enjoy today.
There were many anecdotes about the people
involved with the garden and the ideas that shaped plant choices, gardening
techniques and big and small projects, as well as hardships such as
flooding.
The sheer physical effort that
was required for many years - and still continues - showed the enormous dedication and vision
behind this inspiring site.
For
gardeners and non-gardeners alike, everyone can enjoy the story and beauty of
Heide in Sunday's Garden.
